Toronto New Homeowner Moving Checklist

A Month Before Closing on your new Toronto home…

• Give away, sell or discard any unnecessary belongings
• Start packing seasonal items, seldom-used kitchen utensils, pots and pans and dishes and household items you can do without
• Go to the post office to arrange for your mail to be rerouted
• Inform financial organizations, insurance companies, medical practitioners, credit card companies, employers etc. of your move
• Give out change of address cards to all your friends, relatives and business associates -don’t forget your doctor, lawyer, etc.
• Check and clear any outstanding realty taxes on your present property
• Call your insurance agent and transfer coverage — or arrange new coverage for your new home
• Arrange for the utilities to be shut off and for the connection of utilities for your new house
• Try to arrange your telephone cancellation or transfer for the last possible moment on moving day… not first thing in the morning! Invariably your phone will be cut off and you’re still moving at 2:00 pm!!

In The Last 10 Days Before Moving Day…

• Set up a final property inspection time (if needed) on your new home.
• Arrange a time to meet with your lawyer to sign all the documents
• Sign mortgages documents at your bank
• Arrange a time to pick up keys from your lawyer
• Get the meters read and utilities turned on (hydro, gas, cable) – order a new phone line/ get new phone number
• Pack a box of personal items that will be needed right away in your new home and keep this box with you or have it loaded last into the truck

On Moving Day…

• Keep your tool kit handy
• Get the meters read and utilities turned on
• If possible, have friends or relatives take care of children and pets at their home
• Keep a few plates, glasses and cutlery handy for snacks at your new home
• Keep a phone book on hand
